Kwame Dawes has been teaching at the University of South Carolina since 1992. He is currently Professor of English and Director of the USC Poetry Initiative. Dawes has published fifteen books including nine collections of poetry which have won him such awards as the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, the Poetry Business Prize, the Pushcart Prize and the Foward Poetry prize. Dawes has performed and read from his work and conducted numerous master classes and workshops in Europe, the Caribbean and North America for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Dawes is the programmer of the Calabash international Literary Festival held in Jamaica, in May each year. Kwame Dawes is an Artist in Residence for the South Carolina Young Writer's Conference, The South Carolina African American Writer's Conference, and the Tri-District Arts Consortium.
